The Society for the Promotion of Hospice Care is a charitable organization promoting hospice & palliative care, providing bereavement care services and related education and training to both the carers & general public.

Chief Operation Officer & Superintendent

Core Responsibilities:

  • Provide executive leadership in the strategic planning, development, and delivery of holistic hospice, palliative, and bereavement services across inpatient, day care, and home-based settings.

  • Lead the development and implementation of palliative day care services, with particular emphasis on geriatric palliative care, in collaboration with community partners such as elderly care centres and NGOs.

  • Serve as Superintendent of the Jockey Club Home for Hospice, ensuring daily operations comply with the Standards For Scheduled Nursing Homes and other applicable statutory requirements.

  • Establish and monitor policies, standards, and service protocols to ensure operational excellence, clinical governance, and quality assurance.

  • Foster a culture of interdisciplinary teamwork and staff empowerment to uphold compassionate, person-centred, and culturally sensitive end-of-life care.

  • Enhance support for patients and families by promoting effective communication, managing care expectations, and addressing psychosocial and emotional needs in partnership with the care team.

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements of relevant authorities, including the Department of Health, Social Welfare Department, and other external auditors.

  • Represent the organization in external meetings, government liaison, community engagement, and partnership development initiatives.

  • Contribute to service innovation, organizational growth, and long-term sustainability planning in a self-financed context.

Requirements:

  • A recognized undergraduate degree is required; a postgraduate qualification in healthcare, management, or related fields is strongly preferred.

  • Minimum 15 years of relevant working experience, with at least 10 years in a senior management role within a healthcare, hospice, or NGO setting.

  • Proven leadership in clinical or community-based service development, including change management and cross-sectoral collaboration.

  • Demonstrated ability in strategic planning, programme development, and operational management in self-financed healthcare or social service organizations.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with sensitivity to end-of-life issues and the ability to manage communication with patients, families, staff, and stakeholders under emotionally demanding conditions.

  • Strong supervisory skills and experience in team building and staff performance management.

  • Proficiency in written and spoken English and Cantonese is required; ability to communicate in Mandarin is an advantage.

  • Familiarity with research methods and outcome evaluation frameworks is an asset.

  • Knowledge of innovative technologies in healthcare management or digital health applications is a plus.

Resident Doctor - Palliative and End-of-Life Care (Full/Part-Time)

Key Responsibilities:

 1.      Clinical Care Delivery

  • Provide comprehensive, patient-centered medical care for individuals with life-limiting illnesses in our in-patient unit, out-patient clinic, and within the patient’s own home.

  • Conduct thorough assessments, develop and implement individualized care plans, and manage complex symptoms (e.g., pain, nausea, breathlessness).

  • Lead and participate in family meetings to discuss goals of care, advance care planning, and provide psychosocial support.

  • Work collaboratively as a key member of a multidisciplinary team, including nurses, social workers, and therapists.

  • Provide on-call cover as required by the roster.

2.      Education and Training

  • Design and deliver educational sessions on palliative and end-of-life care for healthcare students (e.g., medical, nursing, and allied health students).

  • Provide clear and empathetic education to patients and their families/carers regarding their illness, prognosis, and care options.

  • Act as a clinical supervisor and mentor for junior staff and students rotating through the service.

3.      Service Development and Strategic Support

  • Contribute to the development and evaluation of new, innovative models of care to enhance service delivery and patient outcomes.

  • Assist the Society in fundraising activities, which may include providing clinical perspectives for grant applications, speaking at donor events, and contributing to awareness campaigns.

  • Attend and contribute to clinical governance and Executive Committee meetings as required.

  • Undertake any other reasonable duties as requested by the Executive Committee to support the Society’s strategic objectives.

Person Specification:

1.      Qualifications & Registration (Essential):

  • Medical degree from a recognized institution.

  • Full registration with the Medical Council of Hong Kong and a license to practise.

  • Significant postgraduate experience, with specific training and experience in Palliative Medicine, Oncology, Geriatric, or a related field.

2.      Experience & Skills (Essential)

  • Proven experience in managing patients with complex palliative and end-of-life care needs.

  • Excellent clinical skills in symptom control and communication in challenging circumstances.

  • Demonstrable ability to work effectively and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

  • Strong teaching and presentation skills, with experience educating both professionals and laypersons.

  • Empathy, resilience, and a profound commitment to patient-centered care.

3.       Experience & Skills (Desirable)

  • Formal qualification in Palliative Medicine.

  • Experience in service development, audit, or quality improvement projects.

  • Experience in contributing to fundraising or public awareness initiatives.

  • A clean, valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for community visits.
