About The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas. The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.
About the position
As Director, Public Affairs, you will develop, manage and implement the Australian Consulate-General’s public affairs and cultural programs, building upon and promoting the broad range of Australian engagement in Hong Kong. You will lead the Public Affairs team to deliver a calendar of events, panels, and functions that support the Australian Government’s public diplomacy objectives. The position will be responsible for managing media inquiries, preparing and coordinating media releases, speeches and other public communications, and overseeing the Consulate’s social media platforms. Note the position requires out of hours / weekend work to support public diplomacy priorities. Overtime pay is available.
Key responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:
Plan, develop and implement a coordinated public diplomacy strategy to increase public understanding of the broad range of Australian engagement in Hong Kong. This will include designing and delivering a calendar of events and activities to support this agenda.
Provide high-level advice to post management and attached agency heads to identify opportunities and issues relevant to the public diplomacy agenda.
Monitor, analyse and report on current affairs and relevant policy issues in Australia and Hong Kong, including monitoring local media coverage and community sentiment concerning Australia.
Initiate, develop and strengthen relationships across a broad range of stakeholders and draw on these to deliver an effective public affairs program.
Develop and implement a strategic and innovative cultural relations program to help promote a positive image of Australia in Hong Kong and Macau.
Coordinate media arrangements for visiting Ministers, senior government representatives and other prominent Australians including the preparation of transcripts for portfolio Ministers.
Manage, plan and coordinate a range of public diplomacy events and initiatives in Hong Kong, including managing the delivery of multiple concurrent events, coordinating stakeholders, speakers and other logistical arrangements such as guest lists, catering, entertainment and technical support.
Develop media releases, speeches, organise media interviews and press briefings; manage and coordinate appropriate media activities.
Monitor developments, sentiment and perceptions of Australia in local Chinese and English language media, report and advise on possible responses where appropriate.
Manage Public Diplomacy budget and resources and source supplementary sponsorship funding as needed.
Supervise and lead the Public Affairs team, provide strategic direction, establish work priorities, monitor performance, provide regular feedback and identify learning opportunities.
Required Qualifications/Experience/Knowledge/Skills
Tertiary qualifications and/or a strong track record of experience in one or more of the following fields: arts and culture, media, public/community relations, event management.
Demonstrated management experience in a busy fast-moving environment.
Superior ability to think creatively, show initiative, work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Proven organisational skills - ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritise effectively.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment with flexibility and consult effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to liaise with high-level stakeholders, and develop and maintain a wide range of relevant contacts.
Demonstrated ability to think strategically and develop written strategy documents.
Desirable
Demonstrated strong familiarity with Australian arts and culture, media and community relations.
Media and event management experience would be an asset.
