The Technology Transfer Center (TTC) serves as a bridge between HKUST faculty and the business community. It identifies collaboration opportunities in the local, regional and international markets based on the University’s research strengths; monitors primary and emerging fields of research within the University for early recognition of commercialization potential; manages intellectual properties arising from research works; and supports faculty to seek joint development opportunities with commercial partners and transfer technology to the commercial domain. With the support from the Hong Kong Government on Knowledge Transfer Fund and in line with the University’s mission to contribute to the economic and social development of Hong Kong, the Center is looking for a competent and dedicated professional to join the Knowledge Transfer team.

Reporting to the Director of TTC, the appointee will assist in the intellectual property (IP) management, technology promotions and transfer activities of the University’s IP. His/Her duties include (i) providing supports to industrial collaborations and technology marketing activities; (ii) conducting market researches; (iii) promoting collaborative ventures and University start-ups; (iv) securing R&D contracts, licensing and consultancy agreements and venture capital funding from the industry; (v) assisting dedicated group of cross-disciplinary faculties and research teams under common interest in addressing applied-research directions and IP protection; (vi) assisting in identifying technology business opportunities, engaging with industries and developing large-scale research proposals and IP pipelines towards effective Knowledge Transfer with particular focus on the ICT technology clusters; (vii) seeking licensing opportunities for the University’s IP; (viii) providing assistance to early stage research and development projects in their process of commercialization; (ix) administrating and managing IP portfolio, including technology review and patent protection process; (x) working closely with different R&D groups within the University and external patent counsels/collaborators to ensure quality and timely patent prosecution and technology transfer activities; (xi) assisting in technology transfer administration and operations; and (xii) performing any other ad-hoc duties as assigned.

Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree or above in electronic or computer engineering area or other related discipline, and at least 7 years of working experience, preferably in technology management or IP administration. Candidates should have understanding of technologies in software technology, big data, FinTech, computer systems, wireless communications and networking, integrated-circuit and system design or microelectronics, and experience in technology evaluation, marketing, business development, and project & event planning and coordination. They should also have an excellent command of written and spoken English and Chinese (including Putonghua) with outstanding communication and organizational skills. They should be able to communicate effectively with professionals from diverse background in both industry and academia, and work independently. They are expected to be highly motivated and proactive, and good at multi-tasking. Research experience and a higher degree with working experience in association with technology transfer, IP protection and management, and patent/copyrights handling will be an advantage. The Center for Global & Community Engagement (GCE) under the School of Engineering aims to broaden HKUST students’ international exposure, engage them in making contributions to the community as well as create and facilitate educational and leadership opportunities. Students are encouraged to participate in international competitions and to utilize their engineering knowledge and technology knowhow innovatively in projects contributing to the society.

The objectives of the GCE are to prepare students with the knowledge, tools and experiences to develop shared global and community connection, nurture social awareness and responsibility, and work towards the goal of benefitting both students and the community.

GCE offers student-oriented enrichment opportunities in various forms, including local and overseas design competitions, services targeted at local community, and activities allied with professional institutions for promoting engineering.

The appointee is expected to provide IT support to the Center as well as assist in activities organized by the GCE.

Applicants should have at least a bachelor’s degree or above in Computer Science or related discipline with relevant work experience preferably in web application development under the LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) environment and/or mobile app development (frontend and backend). Good knowledge of PC, Windows & Mac OS and proficiency in PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, AJAX, HTML, CSS and JQuery are required. Experiences in NAS, Web Servers and Security, Restful API development, STEAM education and Databases administration would be advantageous. Applicants should also have a good command of spoken and written English and Chinese. S/he should have good interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently.
